3,600 miles on the Avalon
11 states visited - TX, LA, AL, MS, FL, GA, NC, SC, TN, VI, KY,
7 high points - FL, NC, SC, GA, TN, KY, VI
Countless hours spent on electronic devices while driving
2 - books on tape (Artemis Fowl series)
So after we walked an average of 7 miles per day in Disney World, we decided we should do some hiking. We rented a small house in Asheville, NC and spent a week exploring the states surrounding NC. We knocked out 6 more high points before heading back to Texas. Girls were troopers and they are really getting into this "high point" adventure. They love it and proved themselves to be VERY worthy hikers on this trip. I am extremely proud of them!
We Johnson's like to get high... we like to get high in every state... ;)
North Carolina
Very nice high point, short walk to the top, 3/4 mile "nature trail" that you can take from the parking lot to make it feel like more of a walk than just parking and heading to the summit. Gift shop! ;)
South Carolina
Taylor and I suffered from a tummy bug on this trip and I actually threw up on the top of this mountain... pretty sure that means I now own it! ;)
Virginia
Our favorite family high point. Our girls proved themselves to be worthy hikers as it was "supposed" to be an 8 mile hike but we took a wrong turn and added about 1.5 miles to it. They loved it! Even the part where we had to run like crazy people and find a hide a rock to hide under so the lightning and rain wouldn't get us. They truly do love an adventure as this was probably their favorite part. On this hike, we got to walk on the Appalachian Trail (a trail that travels around 2100 miles from Georgia to Maine). I am now obsessed with the trail and am reading Bill Bryson's A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail
Kentucky
A drive up high point with a little walk at the end. According to Justin, it's not really a high point unless you climb to highest point on the high point. :) Even if they have removed all stairs that reach the bottom and they clearly do not want people climbing on the tower as there are missing steps, slats at the platforms... but climb we must....
Tennessee
Another very nice high point - we define "nice" by the fact that they have a gift shop, by the way. Flip flops and a gift shop... :) Another short walk on a paved path to the top about 1 mile round trip. This is the busiest high point we have done - I think because it is within the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. We will return to spend more time in Tennessee!!! GORGEOUS!
Georgia
Flip flops and a gift shop... no need to say more :) Paved path about 1/2 mile to the top or they run a shuttle, but shuttles are for babies. ;)
I feel like we should be getting some sort of endorsement from Keen for all this free advertising as Aubrey did all 7 high points in her Keens! ;)
WHEW!!! I am beat!!!
